I’ve recently realized exactly how much I love makeover shows. I LOVE ‘em!
Whether they’re regular people with bad fashion sense who don’t realize what a bad first impression they’re giving off (Style By Jury)...
... restaurants that need serious help and a boost in customers (Restaurant Makeover)...
... expecting couples who want to have the perfect nursery (Make Room For Baby) or people who want to surprise their loved ones by doing up one of the rooms (While You Were Out)...
... or rooms in people's homes that are re-designed to look like a room from the pads of their fave celebrities (My Celebrity Home)...
... or run-down vehicles restored and customised into enviable mean machines (Pimp My Ride / Street Customs)...
And most recently I’ve discovered another show called The Perfect Housewife about hopeless housewives who go through a kind of housekeeping “course” and are later revisited after 2 weeks to see who has turned into “the perfect housewife”...
So naturally, there are before and after pictures. And I think that’s the appeal. The fact that you can see what these people, restaurants or homes looked like in their original state and the amazing transformation after in The Reveal. I LOVE The Reveal! After following that person’s journey from the start, it’s almost gratifying for ME to see the end result and see how happy these people are.
I don’t like ALL make-over shows though. I’m not a fan of shows that involve people having plastic surgery. That’s a bit too extreme, for me. And painful to watch. I like the ones where you can actually pick up useful tips and apply it to your own life. I always find that after watching a show, the ideas and tips shown always inspire me to want to jazz up my wardrobe or potter around my house or do some cooking.
I love the whole ugly-duckling-turned-swan type idea. Although, apparently there’s a study out there that says makeover shows make you feel bad about yourself, especially if you already have low self-esteem. Guess that’s not a problem if you love yourself enough.
I’ve realized, though, that my interest doesn’t just lie in tv shows but in magazines as well. Female mags often have before and after pics of people who want to know how to wear certain clothes or learn how to wear make-up so they’ll be helped out by a stylist or make-up artist. In fact, one of the reasons why I do pro make-up on the side is coz I love the transformation that the person I make-up goes through. And when they’re happy with the result, it just makes my day.
I love buying home décor-type of magazines not just coz I want inspiration for my own place but because they sometimes feature before and after pictures of people’s homes once they’ve been given the magic touch of the professional interior decorator.
