Lazy buggers

We Malaysians are a very lazy lot, aren’t we? We take things for granted because we expect someone else is going to do the work because it’s “their job”.

I get cheesed off in the mornings when I enter the pantry. Why? Because the sink and counter top is usually filled with unwashed mugs, cups and plates. Why? Because we have a tea/cleaning lady who cleans it up. Come oooooonnn!!! Just because we have her is no excuse for you to act like little kids who don’t know how to clean up after themselves. Wash your own friggin’ mugs for pete’s sake! Lazy buggers. Itu pun nak kena ajar ke?

Have you ever thought that her job is not JUST to make drinks and clean up the pantry? Have you not noticed that she also has to vacuum the entire floor, throw away all the trash from each of our waste baskets (and there are MANY of us), wipe our cubicles, etc… and she’s just ONE person! She’s no spring chicken either! Kesian lah dia!

And it’s not just office pantries. You know how horrendous some of our public toilets are, right? I have a sneaky suspicion that it’s because people think “Aiyah… the cleaners will take care of it. It’s their job, what.” I can imagine that if I were one of those cleaners, I’d be thinking “Nak flush pun tak tau!”. I really commend people who work as cleaners especially the ones from our part of the world who have to deal with such nonsense. As it is, they have to clean up after everyone else’s mess. It’s not the most pleasant job out there so we should try to make it more tolerable by being more civic-minded.

I figure the people who throw trash out of their windows while driving also have the same mental mentality – “Oh, got street sweepers who’ll clean it up. Give them something to do”. Tsk. What is wrong with keeping a little plastic bag in your car and throwing your empty drink containers/tissue/cigarette packets, etc.. first and then disposing of them properly at home???

I know we give Singapore a lot of flack for fining anyone and everything for any misdemeanor but right now, it really doesn’t seem like such a bad idea…

My dad's one of the lazy lot in Malaysia. To him, it's like, you're paid to do your job so why should I bother?
I'm not sure if this applies too - I don't think it's necessary in a restaurant but because I've done waitressing before, I KNOW how heavy the plates are and after my meal, I tend to stack the plates up from the largest serving plate to the small sauce plates, just to make it easier for the waiter/waitress. My dad literally glares at me and tells me don't even do it cos you're the guest and it's not your job. I'm like "Pa, when I was a waitress, people in Perth helped me stack the plates and even hand them to me!"

That reminds me of when a restaurant owner recently complained to me about this family who was letting their toddler make a complete mess at the makan table AND the floor and were giving the waiters a look that said "I expect you to clean this up..!" She told me "If they were in Sweden or Australia, THEY would be the ones expected to clean up their OWN mess!".

Well i guess whatever we were taught in schools (eg: Moral Studies, Religious Studies) has gone down the drain like the trash you are talking about. I dunno what is with the habit of 'buang suka-suka'. I hate to admit some of us have this deep and bad habit. As for some people concerned it is just a bad habit that needs REALLY GOOD TEACHING. Don't take things easy. As far as I am concerned is there any harm in putting or keep on hold of your trash until you reach a proper place to dispose it. I believe that if we were taught to do this from small it can be a good habit and following to others. At the work place I really admit to SAY THAT SOME OF US ARE PLAIN OLD LAZY TO CLEAN UP OUR UTENSILS/CUPS AFTER CONSUMING. I as a high level worker, even I know that someone will clean up after me BUT I ADMIT I CLEAN UP AFTER I USE or I BRING MY TRASH UNTIL I FIND A PROPER PLACE TO DISPOSE IT...I can't stand to see dirty things around, it hurts me...ARGGH!!! COME ON !! What is wrong in cleaning up after usage or throw trash appropriately after consuming....our neighboring country (ie Singapore) has to impose strict laws and fines to make sure its' citizens clean up!! I know you say we are too lenient in this aspect but we should cleanup. After all in ISLAM it is mentioned that Cleanliness is part of faith so what is happening??! Think abour it..

I hear you gf ;) Most ppl here expect to be served all the time. Even in self-service restaurants they even have to hire busboys/gals to clear the table – Oy, it’s called a self-service restaurant for Heaven’s sake! You pick up your own food, eat it and clear your own table la. And when I did things by my self, ppl went ‘Owh Ida, why do you have to be so OCD about this’ ;p Disheartening – yeah, big time! It’s a sad, ugly reality but this is us, Malaysians…

People at McD glares at me whenever I pick up my tray and discard the rubbish into the bins. It's like I did something very wrong or demented. I don't care. It makes me feel good when I saw the McD workers smiling thank you to me.
