Valentine, Shmalentine!

So Valentine's Day is around the corner. Can I be honest? I'm not a big fan. I don't even really like roses.

Sure, when I was younger, it seemed like the thing to do when you had a boyfriend. I remember how I used to spend one month getting my handmade Valentine's Day cards ready for him. My first Valentine's, I even made cookies with M&M's coz those were his favourite chocolates. But since then and a few bfs later, I feel I've outgrown V-Day. In fact, I used to make it a point to do the V-Day niceties before or after Feb 14th.

I love being in love, but I've realised that I'm one of those people who find V-Day to be overrated - not to mention expensive. And too much pressure - for the guys who usually are expected to deliver the goods, and for the girls who sometimes end up being disappointed when they don't get what they want.

This doesn't mean I'm not a romantic. I just don't believe in sharing this one day with everybody else. I think it's more special when you make it your own day with your partner. You make it special on your own terms. Not on anyone else's.

And certainly not on just one day of the year. If you're in a relationship, you should always make it a point to do something nice every now and then. A massage after a long day at work; giving her - or him - a break and make dinner; buying something you know they'll like without having to wait for their birthday... Gestures like that are unexpected and most importantly, sincere.

Valentine's Day is just.... obligatory and cliche.

And this is why I'm not doing Red FM's Late Nite Love Songs! ;)
